The Servants have converged on Caster's location, but the creature he's summoned up to fight his battle for him has impressive regenerative abilities, and so far no-one has been able to strike even a disabling blow, never mind a fatal one. The military have been called in as well, moving the conflict beyond what the Holy Grail War's controllers can, well control - the first failure of its kind in the War's history. But where the other Servants have failed, perhaps Gilgamesh can succeed..?
So, the first season (half? cour?) of Fate/Zero left us hanging on a fairly serious cliffhanger, and this episode drops us straight back into the action, with not the slightest bit of recap to refresh your mind after the 3-month break. It took me a few minutes to remember who was who and what had actually "just" happened before things started making sense again - and then I sat back with a suitable sense of awe as most of the episode unfurled on screen. ufotable have cranked pretty much everything up to eleven for this triumphant return - well, apart from one rather awkwardly inserted plot exposition scene near the end that I could have done without.
THE GOOD: Jawdroppingly well-produced episode. If this is any indication of how the rest of the cour is going to go, we're in for a real treat.
THE BAD: It's setting very high expectations for what's to come. Drops you back into the story with not a hint of recap - so how good is your memory again..?
Oh, Fate/Zero, I didn't realise until just now how much I'd missed you. Welcome back.
Fate/Zero is simulcast by Nico Nico Douga, and on a one-week delay by Crunchyroll.
