When he was younger, Jonah professed to hate arms dealers and all that they stood for. That was then - now, he's just started working for a weapons dealer, Koko - a woman with a rather unique attitude to her trade. On his first job, they run into some big problems delivering their merchandise, forcing Koko's team to take extreme action to put things right. Meanwhile, there's a rival group that ants a piece of their action - and money...
"Her name is Koko, she is loco, I said oh no..." Can't be just me who looks at Koko, and thinks of Dio and the Guild (Last Exile). I can also see that she's going to fill my fruitloop quota for the season - which is something I'm very happy about. Jonah is a complete contrast to his new boss - world-weary (especially for one so young), and clearly skilled with the weaponry, it seems he's more tagging along with Koko and her band through idle curiosity than anything else.
To state the obvious: there are comparisons with Black Lagoon that can easily be made here, and that's no bad thing: the action is over-the-top and silly in places, but the show has such a sense of fun about it - in no small part thanks to Koko - that you can't help but sit back and enjoy the ride. There's a story here, too, that is slowly building - and of course Koko's methods of dealing with others make the 'office politics' a lot of fun to watch, too.
THE GOOD: Gloriously over-the-top. Koko leads a cast that seems full of dysfunctional characters, and that's always entertaining.
THE BAD: Too easy to tag it as the new Black Lagoon - could do with finding its own way, and soon. But that's not really a big complaint.
I just finished Mirai Nikki this week, and was wondering where my weekly does of insanity was going to come from now it's gone. Think I may have found its replacement, even if Jormungand isn't quite the same style of insanity...
Jormngand is simulcast by FUNimation (North America only).
