Toradora! 17
I left watching this until after this week’s tragic Clannad for a reason. It totally cheered me up to see the brand new OP and ED credits with a decidedly Taiga x Ryuuji theme in the opening, yesss! TORA X DORA OTP! (Ugh yeah I totally just typed it. Can’t help my baser shipping instincts with these two though - I love ‘em.)
We’re into the Christmas arc now. Taiga is back at school after her suspension (for fighting the student council president last episode) and she’s acting particularly cute and forgiving so that Santa will think she’s a good girl. I really like Taiga’s character for a variety of reasons - including my strangely undying love for Rie Kugimiya - but her contradictory nature is definitely a big part of it. She is violent, egocentric, aggressive, timid, and sometimes mature - in that she is so resolved to being alone and happy - but she’s incredibly childish at the same time. Her decision this episode to set up Ryuuji with Minorin by becoming an adorable “angel of love” showcased both the mature and childish sides of her personality quite nicely.
Of course it’s not going to work, because Minorin is avoiding Ryuuji and Taiga is clueless as to what’s bothering her. Minorin’s inner turmoil has been hinted at for a few episodes, via foreshadowing and the omniscient Ami’s provokations, but now she is starting to obviously act differently. She can’t even play baseball anymore because she’s so distracted - and hopefully we’ll get to find out why soon.
In the meantime, the gang goes to the family restaurant to study for exams, and Ryuuji has a strange reaction to his friends attempting to set Taiga up with Kitamura. Interesting. ~grins from ear to ear~
