With just over two weeks to go until the new season starts, it's time to think about what's coming. The comic involves four girls, each amusingly loopy in her own way. Director Fukuda Michio did storyboards for everything from Ayakashi Ayashi to PaniPoni Dash. Writer Tomizawa Yoshihiko created Onmyou Taisenki and did the script for Starship Operators.Hirano Aya certainly gets my attention, but so do Orikasa Fumiko, Kuwashima Houko, and Neya Michiko (Riza Hawkeye in FMA). These people could create great characters together. He was an important force behind the Suzumiya Haruhi anime but was fired by Kyoto Animation after four episodes of directing Lucky Star. I think he may be a comic genius -- he did the SHnY ED and the Lucky Star ED, as well as episode 00 and the concert episode of SHnY -- so I am right there for this show. This hilarious shoujo anime about romance in the classical music world had among the highest late-night TV ratings in recent memory.But this sequel has a very different staff from the original. It is directed by Kon Chiaki (Higurashi, Junjou Romantika), rather than Kasai Kenichi (Honey&Clover2, KimiKiss Pure Rouge). Enokido Youji is lead writer, as he was on Revolutionary Girl Utena and Ouran HS Host Club. Konparu Tomoko did that job on the first series. I haven't marathoned an anime in a long time. After being repeatedly disappointed by with a lot of the things that I marathoned like Kanon and Da Capo, which I never got past episode 4 of each. I'm not sorry, but harem anime are crap in my books ~but their art is lovely. I really prefer something with a little more common sense or a lot of comedy apart from the blood and guts every once in a while.I've been meaning to watch Lovely Complex for months now. But the premise of tall girl and short guy kinda put me off. Well... I watched and loved Toshokan Sensou already so I figured I should finally watch this already.The story revolves around Koizumi Risa who is taller than the average Japanese female at 5'8" and Otani Atsushi (LOL! Same given name as that short guy the sexy beast Dojo!) who is shorter than the average Japanese male at 5'1". Both have spontaneous and fun-loving personalities who always speak their minds. They fall in love with each other but are hesitant because of they're uneasy about the height different. Risa gets over it faster and confessed to him but he took a little more time getting over the fact and they finally get together. The series spanned through the three years of high school. In between, they are surrounded by their friends some want nothing more than for the two of them to get together and a handful wants to break them up.I love this show! It is freaking awesome! I can't believe I sat through True Tears (I had to admit, it was good but was kinda meh... story-wise) rather than watch this show that time. The story is nothing extraordinary - no on is super rich or super talented or super anything. Actually, it's incredibly ordinary, but the consistency in the characters' personality with the right injection of comedy totally made it worth it! It had the best depiction of boy-girl friendships I've ever seen in anime where the characters are not in elementary school. But the thing I love love love about this show is: common sense. It goes through the motions of misunderstandings and awkward situations, but they don't last very long because the characters are actually willing to listen to explanations when they are being made. They don't stop at, "I will never speak to you again no matter how valid your explanation is!"The art style is suited for the anime... it's not going to win any awards for pretty animation (Also, when I started, I thought Otani looked a lot like that moron Yano from Bokura ga Ita so I had a big prejudice against because he's a moron. I got over that fast because his personality shone more his appearance). The two OPs and EDs are nice, though it's not something I'd listen to regularly - reminds me of perky teenybopper music. I like the BGMs though... well, I am a sucker for BGMs.The only complaint I have about the show is the sequencing. I sat through 17 episodes of getting together and only 2 or so of Koizumi and Otani as couple??? I mean, that's it? The only problem they encountered as a couple before they had a happily ever after is that other short guy in the restaurant that Koizumi worked in? Well, I heard that there are actually more things that happened to the pair as a couple in the manga, but I haven't read the manga. I certainly wouldn't have minded if they had more episodes just to make the part of them being a couple more stable.But other than that, I don't really have any complaints about the show. This is one of those shows where brains is not really a requirement to watch and appreciate the show, which was a relief for me..

Neo-Angelique Abyss is the latest series in a franchise of reverse-harem fantasies centred around a sweet teenage girl who is the future Queen of the Universe and has the power to sweep away evil in a burst of bright light.I know of two other Angelique series and three OVAs, and this is the best I have seen. Some of the staff from Corda D'Oro has come in to refresh the franchise. The bishounen guardians who surround Angelique are really bishounen, and Ange herself is lovely. The show is set in an analog of 18th century Europe, and is full of bishounen fanservice, as well as the fanservice of Ange's rather loli-goth outfits, beautiful rooms in beautiful castles, etc.As in all the other shows in the franchise, the voice-acting is excellent. This time, we have up-and-coming Endou Aya in the title role, as well as such lovely male voices as Takahashi Hiroki, Ohkawa Toru, Onosaka Masaya, Ono Daisuke, Hirakawa Daisuke, Nakamura Yuuichi, Irino Miyu, and others.To help me keep all these voices straight, and to keep the many characters straight, I have made a page with pictures of each main character and their VA, as well as a bit of info about the VA. Click here or on the image to go to the full page:Now, I admit that you might not want to know what some of the voice actors actually look like, after hearing their beautiful voices. But in the interests of greater knowledge....Even the presence of monsters -- something that usually makes a show hard for me to watch -- cannot dampen my affection for this show. Most episodes involve the group finding a monster -- part of the evil Thanatos -- and the guardians first weakening it, then Ange summoning her power and flushing it away in a burst of light.But Ange's doubts and determination, and her relationships with the various guardians, and the guardians' various personalities, add a lot of interest. If you haven't seen an Angelique show before -- and especially if you have -- give this series a try. It raises the Angelique franchise to a new level, at least through five episodes.The show is directed by first-time director Katagai Shin, who did storyboards and episode direction on Corda D'Oro, the fine reverse-harem show from a couple of years ago. Character design adaptation is by Fujiota Maki, who was character designer and animation director of Corda. And the lead writer is Yamada Yuka, who was lead writer on Tide-Line Blue, and did script work on Suzuka, Petopeto-san, Bokura ga Ita, Hataraki Man, Mushiuta, etc.

As usual, what looked like a poor season is actually shaping up to have a number of interesting shows. Nothing so far looks like an instant classic, but there are always surprises. And with 49 shows (including OVAs), there could be plenty of surprises.Hirano Aya returns to anime in a big way, starring in two series (Chico, Heiress of the Phantom Thief and Zettai Karen Children) and appearing in two OVAs (a Lupin III OVA and a Fist of the North Star OVA).I'll be watching Wagaya no O-inari-sama to hear 16-year-old Hayami Saori in her first role since bursting onto the scene at 15 with a wonderful performance as Momoka in Touka Gettan. Yukana in the starring role is also a big plus. What a voice.Kaiba, by the maker of Kemonozume, is a love story set in a future dystopia where bodies die and minds are transplanted, but some memories are lost.... Stars the great talent of Kuwashima Houko, Noto Mamiko, and Paku Romi.If you've never seen a yaoi (gay male) show, you might take a look at Junjou Romantica, directed by the director of Higurashi, and with a great cast: Sakurai Takahiro, Itou Kentarou, Kanna Nobutoshi, Kishio Daisuke, Taniyama Kishou.On the yuri (Lesbian) side, there is the series based on the surprise hit romantic comedy ONA Candy Boy, with Nabatame Hitomi. Seven ten-minute episodes broadcast on the Net.Macross Frontier may be the most anticipated series of the season, extending that franchise. Or the most anticipated might be the new season of Code Geass. The first interests me more than the second.Vampire Knight is written by the writer of true tears, gives a female director who did eps of Princess Tutu her first full show, and character design is by the great Nishida Asako (Simoun, Touka Gettan). Horie Yui is surounded by a bevy of bishies: Miyano Mamoru, Kishio Daisuke, Chiba Susumu, Fukuyama Jun, Suwabe Junichirou, Houshi Souichirou, Koyasu Takehito.Real Drive involves a future dystopia and is done by Production IG based on a concept from Shirow Masamune (Ghost in the Shell, Ghost Hound).ToLoveRu is a top-class ecchi comic that should translate well to anime. Great cast includes Watanabe Akeno, Tomatsu Haruka, Yahagi Sayuri, Arai Satomi, Koyasu Takehito, Hanazawa Kana, Kawasumi Ayako, Nazuka Kaori.Kurenai stars Sawashiro Miyuki and is directed by the director of Red Garden and Rozen Traumend. Decidedly, the word is that 2007 is not as exciting as 2006. We did not have Haruhi, we did not have Simoun, we did not have Black Lagoon. In fact, I'm going to talk about shows I didn't see in 2007 (and some that I did, but not like Haruhi, Simoun and Black Lagoon).
