Sword Art Online and that Open Source Software named “The Seed”.
So, it has been weeks since Sword Art Online ended (1) and we’re back to our normal selves. I’m going to share you my experience after watching the last part of the final episode and how it relates to the programs and applications we have in the present. I bet that everyone of you have watched this one so I guess I won’t do a full recap.
After Kayaba gave “The Seed,” the Virtual Reality MMO framework to Kazuto, what did Kazuto do? He gave it to Egil and requested him to send it to the internet. At that time, VRMMOs had plummeted to an all-time low, with the media covering it.
What happened afterwards? The VRMMO genre went high again, and look, there are lots of virtual worlds that have been made from that single “Seed.”
But what really is “The Seed”? As far as I understand, It’s a proprietary program coded by Akihiko Kayaba for Argus, which was then bought by RCT progress (2) which was then bought by another company who now administrates ALfheim Online. Then it became open-source after the exposure of the ALfheim Online experiment-gate scandal (3) and the fact that it is uploaded to the internet and is ready to be modified — to the point that every user from any VR were able to log in to any other VR they wish.
Now here’s the part where I will relate these things to real-life examples.
OpenOffice - When its owner Sun Microsystems was bought by Oracle, there was a legal backlash among the user community, and in the end, a part of them decided that they will fork it — thus The Document foundation (and LibreOffice) was born. See the “OpenOffice resignations and fork” of the “Sun acquisition by Oracle” Wikipedia article for information.
OpenID - The fact that VR users can log in to any other VR (and possibly import their stats to that certain VR) is the same as OpenID. I have used OpenID for two years and I was impressed. Unfortunately, they were toppled by Facebook, Gogole, Yahoo and other providers’ Single Sign-on APIs. Still, OpenID is that open-source project I loved.
With this dissection, I hope that you are enriched with bits and pieces of information about technology. Have a good day, readers.

I prefer to use the name “RCT progress” instead of just RECTO. There are lotsa RECTOs here in the Philippines, such as Senators Ralph Recto, Claro M. Recto and that guy named Recto Tagabuhin whose tarpaulins with his face is present around the Cainta Junction.
…wherein Sugou takes control of people as lab mice, as presented by Asuna while she is in that specific lab with tentacles and snails as its guards.
