Romeo x Juliet Review by: Jd Banks Based on manga by: Distributor: FUNimation Though Romeo and Juliet are two star-crossed lovers from opposing wealthy families in William Shakespeare’s original play, Romeo x Juliet takes a detour from the dead poet’s renowned hit. Unlike Shakespeare’s simple story, Romeo x Juliet only deals with the essence of love and war between the young lovebirds. Romeo Monteque is a young noble with only an aristocratic life ahead of him. Juliet Capulet disguises herself a boy, masquerading as the feisty Red Whirlwind, Neo-Verona’s justice fighter cloaked in red. Romeo and Juliet’s paths cross by chance; Juliet, portraying the Red Whirlwind, falls off a ledge in the Italian-inspired city and Romeo rescues her from it. Although the deviation from Shakespeare’s script is acceptable and the evolution of the new story is kind to story-tellers, Romeo x Juliet lacks depth and overall meaning. The cliché nature of the plot sets up the anime to equal only a construed version of Romeo and Juliet. The corny lines of the characters, professing love and gushing the meaning of justice in a broken city of corruption, becomes predictable and almost gag-worthy. Most aspects of Romeo x Juliet, even as a stand-alone anime, isn’t completely palatable.
