“It’s now or never,” I told myself. Despite the fact that I have school tomorrow (Monday) morning and I have to sleep early so that I will be able to wake up early to catch the school bus which shall arrive sharp at 5:35 a.m., I just couldn’t help but write something about the first episode of Honey & Clover that I have just watched a moment ago or else I’ll lose whatever I have in mind right now. And so, I bring you all, my “first impressions” on this anime. Honey & Clover is an anime with the blend of the atmosphere of a university/college where there are students that were going through their day-to-day student lives. At the start of the anime, the main characters and their hilarious personalities are introduced in a way where the characters easily blend into the audiences’ mind. Each character has his or her own unique personality. "Here's two kilograms worth of Korokke, but in return, I want you to wake me up by 9 the next morning..."One is the type of student who had skipped school for like, half a month, and then returning back to the student dormitory with two bags of Korokke with a lot of money in his pocket, collapsing immediately after conveying his final message, and that is to wake him up the next morning at 9, so that he didn’t have to stay for another year in uni. The other one is the “underclassman” sort of student, where he had been a rather ‘normal’ student until he got to know some of his looney senpais. The third one is that of those types who would try to maintain his coolness by talking with a low and straight voice giving the wisest advices possible but most of the time would ultimately fail due to other cases. Best of all, he is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita (and I’m sure of it. I know Kyon very much, thank you). The one and only (obvious) female character happened to be someone who seriously looks like a doll for someone to be 18 years old: small and cry-babyish. She even wears those clothes that seriously looked like a doll’s outfit. Her face is round, and her eyes would randomly turn from normal to scary-typed of eyes to those watery eyes wanting to cry. In other words, all of the main characters are either looney or hyper. While all the other side characters’ main purpose of being is just to make this more hilarious (including the female pottery maker, seriously). So far, I’m unable to memorize all of the characters’ names by just watching an episode but I believe I will be able soon enough. What about the story? Well, you can see someone waking up another person who has the ability to sleep like a dead pig (the nearest person I can associate him with is no other than Nayuki from Kanon), fearing that the person sleeping might turn into a dragon when he awakens and eats him. "Now, please wake up!"The cool guy decided to leave for school leaving the sleeping guy and the underclassman guy. Finally, the underclassman guy decided to leave the sleeping guy. This is where a some sort of scooter which they call the “kicking board” which belonged to he cool guy (actually it was the sleeping guy who got it for him for his birthday) came into the scene. Aiming at underclassman... where do you think are you going?!Rwar!Somehow, the sleeping guy managed to awaken and got to school in time. This is where the doll girl came into scene. "Eh... who is she?""She is the daughter of..."She was introduced as the daughter of some very important police-type of person. With her shyness, she wasn’t able to befriend the guys easily. This is when “used-to-be-sleeping-dragon” guy came in, and he seriously petrified the doll. The end. Haha.Nice prawns, hah?Not until you see this! HumphThe OP video is like hell; or in other words, the worse I have seen so far. I hate the prawn for suddenly popping out, scaring the shit out of me. And the OP theme is not any better either. Worse of all, I have no idea why would they want to make such a silly OP video which have nothing to do at all with the story of the anime. I have no positive comments for the ED theme either ways, due to the fact that it’s not really catchy in a sort of sense. At least it’s much better than the OP. Well, what made me happy was the insert song. As I was told, every episode has its own insert song. The first episode’s insert song was very nice, and I believe the coming episodes’ won’t fail me. Mainly it’s school life and comedy as well as romance. But according to what I was told, it is those of drama and ‘slice of life’ type. Hmm. All together, the anime has like 36 episodes (2 seasons, 24 and 12 respectively) + 2 OAVs. I won’t do episode summaries for this series but instead I’ll do an overall summary at the end of each season. Well, I must say that I have enjoyed the beginning of the anime. The art is like, beautiful and soft, and therefore soothing. The first impression is the most important, and this anime has indeed left a strong impression on me. At least there’s someone voiced by Tomokazu Sugita, lol.Last but not least, Keep-C1-Nanashi had done a really good job in subtitling the anime (first episode, at least) I must say.
