My second first impressions post for the Winter 2011 season is for Freezing, a show about super powered girls who fight each to get stronger and also fight against powerful aliens. Expect to see lots of blood spill and limbs fly.
Bring it on, ladies.
Premise:
Earth is under threat from powerful aliens call Nova that come from another dimension. In order to defend against the aliens, the military has developed and trained girls with super fighting and regenerative abilities called Pandoras and also guys called Limiters who serve as support/partners for the Pandoras.
The Untouchable Queen has no trouble disposing a high ranked classmate...
Brief Summary of the episode:
Four years ago, Kazuya Aoi's older sister Kazuha served as a Pandora and sacrificed herself to defeat a powerful Nova. To the present, Kazuya is joining to West Genetic Academy to train to become a Limiter. Kazuya is brought to academy while a bloody battle royale is going on to determine rankings for the second grade. In the battle, no. 1 ranked Satellizer el Bridget, aka the Untouchable Queen, makes short work of lower ranked students and also easily defeats ranks 3 through 5. Satellizer is then confronted by no. 2 ranked Ganessa Roland. Satellizer gains the upper hand and the fight spills out to the hallway where Kazuya is. Satellizer reminds Kazuya of his older sister and this prompts Kazuya to hug Satellizer without thinking. For some reason, Satellizer is unable to break free from Kazuya and is left open to attack by Ganessa.
... but she can't do anything when a guy glomps her.

The episode had a bit of everything, from character introductions to Pandora vs. Pandora battles to a flashback and some exposition about how things work between Pandoras and Limiters. All of these things are interlaced together and it wasn't too bad to watch. I didn't really understand the stuff about "Ereinbar" (the synchronization between Pandora and her Limiter I presume), but we'll probably see it in action soon enough, and I'm not expecting the story to make a whole lot of sense anyways.
From the first episode, Freezing seems to be in line with the fan service girls combat genre except that the violence is a bit more bloody and gory. There was plenty of blood in the episode and some missing limbs. The level of violence is considerably higher than other shows in the genre such as Sekirei or Queen's Blade, and it's probably around the same as Claymore. Otherwise, everything else looks typical of the genre, with a host of pretty female warriors including our well-endowed female lead Satellizer, and an initially meek and girly-looking male lead in Kazuya. There was a noticeable amount of fan service, but it was mostly offset by the more abundant graphic violence.
Last thing to mention about the premiere is that the animation looks a bit dated. It's acceptable, but the colors and the smoothness of the action certainly could be better.
Overall, it was an okay first episode. I'm not expecting much in the way of story, but the action is promising in that it's fairly hardcore. If Freezing can keep the action going and not get too bogged down by "plot" then it should be at least a decent show to watch.
