“It galled me to do everything that young punk said…but you can’t judge a person by their age. There are young kids who’ve lived and felt more in their short lives than I have in all of mine.” You ever had one of those moments where you talk to someone younger than you and felt like that person was actually making sense? What if someone older talking to you felt the same? Don’t worry, you’re not the only ones.  Earlier this week at work, I had a conversation with a coworker much older than I was about her declining trust in her family members. She explained that there was so deceit among her relatives to the point where she wanted to say something to them. Despite speaking her mind, her family continued on with their negative energy. She told me she trusted her friends more than her family. I said to her that there are some people who live to bring others down with them and that she has to learn to ignore them. Not everyone will listen to what others have to say. Life’s always to be full of difficult people. If arguing won’t do any good, just agree to disagree. She went to say that I gave some really good advice towards her.  I was speechless, but it reminded me of the Gintama chapter/episode where Taizo Hasegawa got a job as a cab driver. He decided to change himself out of the advice of someone who could be his protege, Gintoki Sakata. One of the things I have noticed in my life is that older people have gravitated towards me, professionally and personally. It makes one think about the importance of intergenerational relationships. People tend to focus on how youth can learn from their elders, but the same can be said vice versa. Young people tend to be ambitious and more practical. The older generation can take lessons from them on continuing to strive. Youth also explore all kinds of solutions for whatever problem they encounter. Ever notice the imagination of kids sometimes? It’s insane and makes you think about what happened to ourselves as we have gotten older. With the proliferation of technology, we seriously need a better focus on intergenerational learning. Yes, kids do say the darndest things. But damn, those things can be freaking awe-inspiring.
