Episode 1 The Girls are HereProfessor Utonium and his son Ken are busy working in the lab as the Professor attempts to restore the Powerpuff Girls Z to normal. Ken tells his father not to worry the girls seem to be enjoying themselves. Just after their latest attempt explodes in their faces, they receive an urgent call from Mayor Mayer, showing video of giant monkey that has appeared at a kindergarten and is caging the students and principal. The mayor requests that the Powerpuff Girls be dispatched. Peach the talking dog gives the signal to the girls; they tell the teacher their sick and rush from the classroom to find a deserted area they can transform. The girls receive video of the monster and hurry to the scene, where the monster is stealing candy from the children. When the girls arrive the children stop crying and ask the girls for their autographs, which the girls are happy to comply with. The monkey wants an autograph too. This show is so funny, I’d never seen the American original which this Japanese anime is based on but the group that’s subbing it is known for the toku and quirky dramas I like such as Sexy Voice and Robo and Akihabara@deep, so I decided to give it a try. I’m very glad that I did, it's really a parody of toku/magical girl shows. During the first fight of the series the girls run out of energy and stop for ice cream, the giant monkey joins them. The girls themselves each have their own personalities but my favourite so far is Kaoru or Powered Buttercup, the tomboy of the group who keeps complaining after being transformed that she’s cold from wearing a skirt. The mayor reminds me of Captain Kangaroo my preschool idol, along with his sexy assistant Miss Bellum taking the place of Mr Moose. If you like toku and are looking for a laugh then you should give this show a try. Recommended to anime fans who enjoyed Cutie Honey or Future Police Urashiman.Fifty one of the fifty two episode anime series has been released by TV Nihon and the easiest way to get them is by direct download on their forum here.
