Like the few other episodes of Shuffle which introduces the harems of Rin who is the main male character of the anime, this episode introduces the one and only loli of this anime series, Primula. Primula isn’t like any other lolis who would be energetic, cheerful, childish and carefree. Rather, she is a quiet girl who is quite straightforward and speaks everything frankly and honestly. She does not know how to cheer anyone up, not to mention herself. However, she does have her favourite pastimes, although they’re mainly doing weird activities such as herbs grinding. And as far as Rin is concerned about Primula, he had noticed that Primula had never ever smiled. She is usually seen with her cat doll which Nerine had given her a long time ago. In this episode, she accidentally tore apart her cat doll’s arm and cotton wool came out of it. Rin, who knew what Primula had wanted since the first time he saw her in the arcade, got a new cat doll for her. This is where the title of this episode, “Smile”, came to work."Your lunch is on the table, as usual!"It was the morning of a schooling day. Rin and Kaede were getting ready to go to school. As they were about to leave, Rin had told Primula that he is leaving her in charged of the house. Kaede said that she had prepared her lunch and she had put it on the table. Meanwhile, Nerine and Lisianthus were waiting for them outside of house to go to school together. They bade goodbye to Primula and went off. As they are walking to school, Lisianthus started the topic by asking won’t Primula be lonely all alone at home by herself. Kaede added saying that she felt sorry for the girl. Nerine then said that there wasn’t much of a choice. Rin said that he was just bothered by the fact that Primula had never smiled once since she came to live with them. It was as if she didn’t have a soul, and wonder whether it was because they had often left her alone at home. Nerine quickly said that Nerine had been like that when she lived in the demons’ world. Lisianthus then suggested that she should get to know this world a little more as it would be better for her. Rin concluded the conversation by saying that they should bring Primula somewhere. There should be something fun for her to do, Rin finally said.Rim-chan's snack.Meanwhile at home, Primula was bored and she had walked around in the house. She went into Rin’s room and had a look at the toy ship on Rin’s table. She lifted a part of the ship and a few pieces came dropping out. She then left the room because she feared that Rin might be mad at her. She opened the fridge and saw a piece of cake with a note “Rim-chan’s Snack” on it. She then closed the fridge as if she saw nothing. Later, she turned on the TV, but somehow there wasn’t a channel which she was interested in. So she kept on switching channels until she gave up.Cotton wool coming out from the torn part..Primula was playing with her cat doll and she accidentally ripped apart the doll in the armpit. Cotton wool came out of it. Primula tried to push it back, but instead, more cotton wool came out. She thought of the past where Nerine had gave her the doll and said that it was her first... love. Primula didn’t know what to do, and she went towards to Rin’s school. "I know you are hiding your fantasies about litte girls."In school, Rin was daydreaming while Ms. Benibara, the teacher was teaching a lesson about the three worlds. Then when lesson was over, Midoriba came over to Rin and said that he had been listenning to words that say that he is worried about Primula, however Midoriba came to call her “Lolita”. “I know you are trying to hide your fantasies about little girls,” he said to Rin. The three girls then came over to him and said that they had spoken with Midoriba about the conversation they had had in the morning. “We though he should know the best way to cheer up a girl”. But instead, Rin replied saying that Midoriba was the one person who needed the advice more than anyone else. The three girls blushed. Midoriba then said that the best way to cheer a girl up is to give her a present. Rin then thought of buying her a doll, but Midoriba immediately gave a “better” idea, in which he had suggested buying a swimsuit for her. Rin, with his usual “your idea sucks” low tone voice, commented that Midoriba needed professional help while Midoriba enters into his visions of Primula in a school swimsuit. Rin couldn’t imagine a Primula in a swimsuit and at last, said “Someone save me from this swimsuit hell!” "Did you hear Rin calling us sweethearts?""I need to see you."I'll fix it as soon as I return home.This is when Mayumi walked over to Rin to tell him that someone is at the door looking for him. Primula then walked in into the classroom while everyone in class started to gossip. Rin stood up and walked towards Primula with Kaede. Kaede asked Primula whether there is a problem at home. Mayumi took the opportunity to say that the girl is one of Rin’s sweethearts, and when the other girls heard about it, they went high. Rin denied it while Mayumi asked him to introduce Primula. Rin then introduces her as someone from the demon’s realm and is like a younger sister to Nerine. Kaede then added that they are taking care of her in the request of the Demon Lord. Primula pulled Rin’s sleeve and this is where Rin was reminded about Primula’s appearance in school. Primula then showed Rin the torn doll cat. Kaede took a look at the doll and said that she can mend it when she returns home. Rin gave Primula a pat on the head and said that it would work out and told Primula that she should have come to school for such reason. This is when Ms. Benibara came in and requested Primula to leave as the bell had rang sometime ago class is about to start.Rin feels embarrassed to look at Primula.. As Ms. Benibara talks about the history during ancient times, it started to rain outside and Rin became worried about Primula. He then asked to be excused to go to the bathroom. Well... Rin didn’t actually go to the bathroom. He went to see Primula, who was caught in the rain. Primula was already all wet when Rin caught up to her. Rin told Primula to take a hot bath as soon as she reaches home. This is when Rin saw that Primula wasn’t wearing a bra as he can see through Primula’s wet blouse. He thought to himself that getting a bra was more important than than those stupid swimsuits. Rin and Primula waited until the rain to stop.Back at home, Rin told Kaede about everything, and said that being a guy, he isn’t experienced with such things. Kaede said that she should have borrowed some of hers to Primula, but Rin said that underwears won’t do. He then said that they should go shopping on the coming Sunday. Kaede agreed. She also said that she had fixed Primula’s doll, but it’s still worn out in several places and is quite old.On the day Rin and Kaede brought Primula out shopping, Nerine and Lisianthus had been waiting outside of their house with Asa and Kareha. Kareha told Rin that Kaede had told them that he would be looking for some lingerie for Primula and they had joined in the search. Rin then asked them whether they are really here to help out or just want to have fun with his sour face. Asa then went over to Rin, gave him a slap on his back like she would usually do in school, and said that to leave it to them if anything where to happen. The search for the ‘perfect lingerie for Primula’ had started in a shop filled with lingerie which they had gone to. Meanwhile Primula doesn’t have any opinion on choosing her own underwears, others are already helping themselves with sexy lingeries. Rin was rather shocked by the girls and had decided to wait outside of the shop while the other girls help to choose Primula’s undergarments."Let's go to the game corner.."Two children who were talking about the game centre ran through Rin. This is when Rin thought of killing time by playing some arcade games. In the game centre, Rin was reminded that he had saw Primula for the first time in here. Primula had been staring at the catcher game at that time. Rin then remembered that Primula had wanted a new cat doll. "Is this good?"Meanwhile the others are still choosing nice lingerie for Primula, Rin was running around looking for a cat doll. He went into stores selling toys but couldn’t find any cat dolls. However finally, he did found one."Sorry we have made you wait for a while."Primula smiling...When they had finished choosing, they came out of the shop. They were worried that Rin wasn’t outside. Shortly, Rin came running back carring a shopping bag. He apologized for keeping them waiting for a while. Asa then jokingly said that there were too many intriguing ones that they had trouble deciding. Rin then showed his sour face at Asa, asking them that they bought those strings or those see-throughs or not. Asa laughed while Kaede said that Asa was about to bring them to the cashier, but luckily she had stopped her in time. Rin said that as long as they had bought something decent, that’s good. Primula response was, “it took sometime”. Kaede then asked Rin whether he was shopping for something as he was carrying a shopping bag. Rin nodded and said that it was for Primula. He handed over the shopping bag to Primula, saying “It’s a small gift.” Inside was a brand new cat doll. Primula held the doll cat which she had just got from Rin and said ‘thank you’ silently.My note: Well, I do not know what the actual definition of ‘loli’ is, but according to Wikipedia, a loli is a “seductive, sexually attractive, or sexually precocious young girl.” Well, I do not see how Primula can actually fill those terms. Meanwhile, others use the term ‘loli’ on any Japanese girls.
