You know, CLAMP, every project that you do doesn't have to tie into your mishmash of a crossover. Really! Remember when you used to do original, stand-alone projects? No? Well, at least one major mystery has been solved.
Of course, it's not completely spelled out, but anyone with knowledge of the xxxHolic manga series should've been able to figure out who the dog was. In case you don't know and don't mind the spoilers....it's Watanuki. All of the discussion about "a shop that grants wishes" was a dead giveaway, and with that information the reasoning behind Fukuyama Jun voicing a dog suddenly makes sense; he was the voice of Watanuki for the anime adaptation. I'm not really sure how to feel about this. While xxxHolic is a great series (I prefer it to Tsubasa Chronicles, which started out great but then collapsed on itself), I feel like CLAMP might be taking the easy way out by applying the logic of that universe to this one. The show has made it clear that all it really wants is gore, and the still unexplained covenant was enough to achieve that. So why drag a crossover into a show that's still struggling to deliver on expectations?
Putting that discussion aside for a future episode, the battle this week was pretty cool, pitting Saya against a giant six-armed samurai, and the banter during the battle was interesting as well. As a lot of people still watching have speculated, Saya's dad is definitely hiding something from her, opening up the possibility that it might not just be Saya who isn't fully human. There was also a bit of a cliffhanger ending as Tokizane finds Saya in a pool of blood after the battle, but he sounded pretty accepting of it in the next episode preview, so it's doubtful anything major will result from it. On a random note, the police really didn't notice the bloody massacre in the middle of the day from the last episode? Does Saya's dad have a secret cleanup crew or something? I've honestly been wondering about how the damage to the town has been explained and fixed in such a sort amount of time. Or maybe it's just something about the show that I'm just supposed to accept and not question. Like how CLAMP has to make everything into a crossover.
