Love and Poetry. Like Chocolate and Strawberries Japanese poetry bursts with vibrancy as it describes natures and matters of love. With romance powerhouse Kenichi Kasai (Nodame Catabile, Honey and Clover) directing Chouyaku Hyakunin Isshu: Uta Koi, does this series sing a pretty love song? First a little lesson so you can’t say I didn’t teach [...]

It still surprises me how light-hearted this series is, but really: I’m learning something new with every episode here. This episode in particular contained a lot of comic relief. And almost no romance whatsoever. Instead, this is about two poets and their relationship, as they discuss poems and love poems. I did not expect that, [...]

I guess bromance is still romance... kind of.

Do you remember the Christian anime series, Superbook? For many kids, it was their first exposure to anime. The Christian Broadcasting Network, which rebooted the series in 2009, is looking for an art director to work on the new episodes. [CBN] Zeroe4 returned to Japan from his time in the Philippines, where he and the [...]

Initial impression – not sure what I just watched, but it was good Summer 2012 (12 episodes) (title translation – Love Poem Card Game) (more info) At first I was very confused by the opening introduction of Uta Koi and I was wondering if I was watching some badly reimagined Hetalia clone. However, once narrator [...]

Now that all Summer series have debuted, I can say this for certain: Uta Koi has the best soundtrack of the season. Even though this is a season that has three of my favorite composers in it (Yuki Kajiura, Kou Otani and Hikaru Nanase), it is Yasunori Mitsuda who until now was completely unknown to [...]

"Munesada and Yoshiko - the Monk Henjou"
To be or not to be – that is the question. This was my favorite episode, but I'd be a liar if I said this episode didn't make me rage... massive tl;dr ahead.

「貞明と綏子 陽成院」 (Sadaakira to Yasuko Youzei In)
"Sadaakira and Yasuko - Former Emperor Youzei"
The loose continuity Uta Koi features in its second episode is rather nice, giving it an unexpectedly cohesive feel and an added depth . More than that though, the use of poetry is thoroughly explored as a means to express one's true desires and feelings.

Before I start with this entry, there is one question that I just have to ask first: WHY, for the love of god, would you want to censor snakes!?? In any case, Uta Koi surprised me with its atmosphere that was completely different from what I expected. This is Josei, right? Then why was the [...]

Chouyaku Hyakuninisshu: Uta Koi according to its description is a ‘super liberal’ interpretation of the Hyakuninisshu, a famous anthology of poems compiled during the Heian period (794-1185AD). It contains such one hundred poems composed by one hundred poets, including famous stories such as The Tale of Genji’s Murasaki Shikibu. Whenever you see a description suggesting [...]

Moyashimon Returns Short Synopsis: Our lead character is a college student. When the second season of Moyashimon was first introduced, I was glad (obviously, after Guilty Crown), but I couldn’t for the love of me remember why I liked the original series so much. Yeah sure it had a very creative premise and all, but [...]
