In 1961, a young woman named Nunoe took part in an omiai-- an arranged-marriage meeting –with a young manga artist named Shigeru Mura. They worked out the arrangement and got married, although they lived pretty destitute lives for some time...at least until Shigeru came to create a manga called Gegege no Kitaro, under the name Shigeru Mizuki.Later in life, Nunoe wrote an autobiography of herself and her husband titeld Gegege no Nyoubou (Wife of Gegege), which Tokyograph now reports is being made into a live-action drama that will air on the NHK in March 2010. A theatrical film based on the book is also in the works, and will be directed by Takuji Suzuki, a writer/actor/director himself and the director of a 1999 film called One Piece!. No, not THAT One Piece-- it was a collection of 14 5-minute short films from various directors working with no budget who shot the films using only one fixed camera shot-- no panning, no cuts, nothing. Pretty interesting, hm?Neither project has had a cast announcement yet. More interestingly I'm surprised that there hasn't been any comment by Shigeru Mizuki himself-- he's not dead, y'know. In fact, he celebrated his 87th birthday this March.
