Most plot-based series have clearly defined episodes which either focus on building up or pushing the story forward with many climaxes. I like it when a series combines both into one, just like Ghost Hound is currently doing. The majority of the episode focused on fleshing out the characters a bit more, while the episode [...]

This show is trying to pick a fight with me!
It started with the “monkey butts” in episode four. The alien-astal projection was one thing, but a monkey butt combo was a total knockout. I wasn’t sure I could recover from it. I decided to watch episode five to see if there were any [...]

Boy, MRI-scans. That brings back memories, as I’ve had a few of them myself. I’ve never had them on my brains, though. Basically, the entire first half of the episode is something what you’d call “Brain MRI-scans for Dummies”, and it’s basically one big lecture, which I of course couldn’t understand. ^^; It was interesting [...]

[ Focus 05: Out of Body Experience ]
Lots of good stuff came up in this episode. Our three male protagonists are pretty much friends now. We’re also shown the problems that each of them have to face daily. Taro is in constant fear of his mother snapping; Makoto is being hassled by his mad grandmother [...]

One thing that I’ve been wondering about this series: what’s going to be the point? Will it just feature Tarou and the others exploring their fears, or is there going to be some kind of crisis or issue that will be introduced in the second half of this series? I originally thought that as soon [...]

This is a show that continues to stretch my poor brain into cramp-inducing contortions - it just ain’t natural! I’m beginning to seriously warm to the op theme now - partly because it reminds me of Ms Kanno’s jazz-tinged efforts, but also because it’s catchy enough in a Chandler-esque film noir kind of way to draw you in [...]

As the story finally finished its introduction, it is slowly building up to a plot. The three of them experienced an out of body experience at Episode 4, and they are still wondering if the event happened. Ghost Hound is finally getting more interesting, with more character development and plot on the spiritual world.
What are [...]

This was the best episode yet. So much happened and I was actually freaked out. The freak out came when Taro was walking along the corridor alone and was suddenly being chased by a pale female silhouette. I don’t blame Taro, I would’ve hauled my ass forward as [...]

[ Focus 03: Phobia Exposure ]
Though it would seem there was nothing new in this episode at first glance. We get some background info on Masayuki which shows us that he experienced a classmates suicide in the past. Since this involved the person jumping to their death from the school rooftop. I think, for now, [...]

I’m quite interested to find out the direction in which Ghost Hound is heading. The episodes have been progressing quite naturally, and while I thought that the previous episode concluded the introduction for this series, this episode made me think that this series is still quite busy introducing its concepts. Reminds me of Ergo Proxy, [...]

Episode: Ghost Hound Episode 5
Synopsis: Masayuki invites Tarou and Makoto to go to the abandoned hospital near the dam, the very place where Tarou and his sister were kept eleven years ago.
Makoto is shown playing an electric guitar in his room. Meanwhile, his eccentric looking grandmother has a guest. She performs some sort of ritual.
Tarou is at Masayuki's house. He tries some virtual reality device that make's one feel as if flying. Mayasuki tells him that the head mounted device is equipped with a gyroscope, used to maintain orientation. Tarou finds it amazing. He asks if Masayuki plays with it a lot. Masayuki replies he doesn't. He says it's not so much a game compared to therapy. Tarou asks Masayuki if has a condition. Masayuki tells him he only has a small fear of heights. He thought he could get rid out it with virtual reality. Tarou then asks if it would be possible to cure it that way. Masayuki tells him it is, by intentionally experiencing the cause of the phobia. Tarou says he remember it's...

Ghost Hound continues to impress me in its own unique manner, but I think this episode marks the beginning of an upwards drift for the show, as ambient eeriness is overtaken in prominence by the plot and the characterisation. The last few episodes have tip-toed around character development, keeping the cast, with a few [...]

Putting together Production I.G. and Shirow Masamune is cause for celebration nowadays; most noted for his hand in the blindingly excellent Ghost in the Shell universe, even his lesser known works such as Appleseed and Dominion Tank Police stand out as unique and filled with his trademark personality. Given that, it may [...]

I imagine that Ghost Hound was born of this trial:
EXTERIOR: Production I.G. Tower, a building that looms ominously against a cloudy and thunderous sky. A crow caws.
INTERIOR: ISHIKAWA sits at his desk, brooding. He is attended to by SHIROW and OSHII. OSHII is humming a jolly tune to himself at a separate table.
ISHIKAWA: It occurs [...]

[Summary]
Tarou exposes himself to his phobia by going to the abandoned hospital where he and his sister were held captive after the kidnapping. Masayuki who suggested the idea came along with a surprise. He also brought along Makoto. The closer and closer they get to the hospital, Tarou starts breathing harder and remembers things that [...]
