Its here! The long awaited return of Hajime no Ippo in anime form. There's a wealth of manga source material to cover and a good 24 episode run to cover it, so why then.. did the first episode of Rising feel like more a highlights reel than anything else? No one could be more excited about a third season of Ippo than myself. I only got into Hajime no Ippo a few years ago, and bulk watched the first series, the OVAs, and followed the second series as it was airing. Since then, not ever expecting a third season (everyone kind of seemed to forget about Ippo in the main stream anime industry), I also read through the manga and am pretty close to the current chapter. The transition from anime to manga was pretty seamless for me, mostly because Madhouse has done such an exceptional job with their Ippo adaptions.

"They don't make them like used to", nothing echoes this phrase more than the second anime series adaption for the popular Hajime no Ippo manga. Coming out aproximately six years after the last animated work on the franchise, New Challenger is the most modernized incarnation of the franchise yet. What that means for the series is that there are some marked improvements and some more traditional pitfalls that modern series tend to fall into as well. While the series gets an amazingly fresh coat of pain in the visuals, audio and overall production, it also loses a lot of the slow build up and long length that made the first series so engrossing and easy to get lost in.

Among the many genre present in the anime landscape today, shounen hold particular esteem as being extremely popular and very mainstream. Titles like Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, Naruto and Bleach have propelled the shounen genre to the very top of the Anime food chain. A sub genre of the Shounen library, sports shounen, however, is a completely separate matter. Far from being popular, only the most hardcore of hardcore Anime fans seems to enjoy this incredibly niche genre. It is indeed a tragedy, because with series like Hajime no Ippo, it becomes difficult to imagine a more engrossing, exciting and thrilling piece of entertainment in the Anime industry.
