Nagi Sanzenin is in Las Vegas - or more accurately, a part of the Nevada desert somewhere near Las Vegas, where she'd been searching for Area 51 - and where she's now thoroughly stranded thanks to her wrecked car. Normally, this would be just the osrt of situation her butler Hayate would rescue her from - but Hayate's no longer on the scene, which leaves Nagi in a bit of a bind. But let's hit the rewind button, and start the tale of how she got to this point...
After two previous TV series and a movie, Hayate the Combat Butler returns. Normally, I wouldn't jump into a series like I am with this one - I've never seen the previous incarnations, and I hate finding myself lost in a show that's already done the work of developing its characters and setting - but I was assured that this was more of a reboot than a continuation, so I decided to give it a whirl.
A reboot it may be, but the reboot still seems to assume that you know who's who and don't need any help with the relationship chart or with some basic recurring story themes (like Nagi's kidnapping). TL;DR version: I'm lost, and that doesn't reallu help much when it comes to enjoyment of the show. Okay, it's not like there's a particularly deep storyline going on here - the basic connection between Nagi, Hayate and Maria is easy enough to figure out. But between the jump from the opening Nevada scenes and the rest of the ep; and certain characters introduced later in the ep, there's enough that I'm not sure about that it's annoying me.
THE GOOD: Some funny moments. But then this is a comedy series, so there had bloody better be.
THE BAD: It may be a "reboot", but it's still assuming enough prior knowledge that it's not easy to just jump in at this point.
Three-episode rule applies, I think, to give it time to fill in the blanks for me. But if it continues to assume prior knowledge, it'll be one for the droplist.
Hayate the Combat Butler: Can't Take My Eyes Off You is streamed by Crunchyroll.
