Let me begin by saying that Akagi, the show, wasn’t anything special. Maybe if I knew the game a little better, I’d appreciate the technicalities a little more. On the other hand, Akagi, the man, was more than I had hoped for. He’s a guy with absolutely no regard for his own life, and he [...]

I’m not the only one that’s pleased that someone has finally subbed the Hidamari Sketch specials (now if only Sketchbook could finish at least :P). As you’ve seen on this blog, the series is one of my favorites, and I keep trying to get people to take a look at it, and it’s working [...]

Hopefully you guys have had a good Christmas and an even better Boxing Day/Start of Kwanzaa. And in case you’re wondering, I’m not Canadian, nor do I actually celebrate Kwanzaa. Now on the actual post.
Even though I’m making a list of what I found to be the most interesting, impressionable, immaterial (and [...]

6. Hidamari Sketch
What is Hidamari Sketch?
It’s yet another adaptation of a 4-koma comic strip, of course. And it’s another one of those Shinbo shows. And it goes without saying that it’s slice-of-life. But, as accurate as these descriptions may be, I don’t think they say much more about the show than [...]

Yuno on the left, Miyako on the right
While I could have made my first look back at 2007 about something mainstream like Lucky Star, I figured everyone already knew how awesome that show was, so I should probably start with something most people haven’t seen. You aren’t going to see this on the shelves [...]

Don’t ask me why it took me three months to watch the final episodes of Hidamari Sketch. It just kinda happened that way. Not that I hate Hidamari or anything, I like it a lot. It’s a great slice of life series with wonderful characters and unique art direction courtesy of Akiyuki Shinbo. After the [...]

I could safely say that Hidamari Sketch is a show that I can rewatch years down the line and still feel like the show hasn’t lost a step. Each episode is standalone, though you find that things introduced early on are referenced later in the series and become signals for our remembrances (progress! Change [...]

I’ve been following Hidamari for quite some time now. I know Mike spoke a while back about those simple shows you end up going back to instead of watching “deeper” stuff. Hidamari fills that role for me. It’s a nice, sweet slice of life series with a couple laughs to keep things interesting.
As in most [...]

Title: Hidamari Sketch Based On: Hidamari Sketch (4-koma) Production: ShaftHidamari Sketch is quite the charming show if I do say so myself. If you're into slice-of-life anime/manga like Azumanga Daioh or Lucky Star, you definately should check this out. The story is about the daily life of Yuno, wo dreams to be a great artist, and her friends (Miyako, Hiro and Sae) who live in the Hidamari Apartments. The characters are pretty likeable, my favorite has to be Miyako because of her childish personality, with Yuno coming in second because of her being a pretty cute protagonist. ^^The animation for the anime is pretty unique too with it's combination of traditional hand-drawn animation and cut-out photographs, although the animation isn't the best it is pretty warmhearted. The content of each episode takes place in anachronic order, but it doesn't really confuse you à la The Melchancoly of Haruhi Suzumiya (to an extent) and Touka Gettan. The 4-koma is pretty adorable too and a nice read, so check it out if you have a chance. If you happen to like the characters, keep reading because the very soul of a yonkoma and slice-of-life anime/manga in general is watching your favorite characters live their lives and watching them do their thing, getting to know them better. If you don't like the characters, there'd be no point.OP: "Sketch Switch" - Kana Asumi, Kaori Mizuhashi, Ryoko Shintani and Yuko GotoED: "Mebae Drive" - marble

Slice-of-life, one of the more difficult genres of anime in my opinion. In this genre, it is important to have not only great characters, but great chemistries of characters. Because your story will remain in the sidelines for the most part, the characters must be interesting enough, and not only that, the characters must interact [...]
