Yukiteru "Yuki" Amano is a loner who spends his time writing in his cell phone diary and talking to an imaginary friend, Deus Ex Machina. However, one morning, he finds his diary entry for the day has been filled in already. Stranger yet, the events portrayed in the diary start coming true. Deus, who reveals he is an actual God and not so imaginary after all, warns Yuki that if he loses his diary, he will die. As Yuki starts using the diary to his advantage, he is approached by a girl from his class, Yuno Gasai. Yuno who also possesses a Future Diary - one that foretells Yuki's death at the hands of a serial killer, another Future Diary owner...
Last show of the season that I get to (barring any really late annoucements), and the one I was most looking forward to. So far, it hasn't disappointed, either. The idea boils down quite simply: there are 12 people in possession of Future Diaries, and the last one standing will succeed Deus as Lord of Space and Time - God, to all intents and purposes. That's a goal that people would happily kill for, and this episode wastes no time in laying out this show's ambitions as being the bloodiest of the season (although it may have competition in that regard from C3).
Of the diary holders we've met so far, Yuki is unfortunately one of those personality black holes that anime does so well badly, but his protector stalker Yuno.... Hooo boy. She is the yandere girl to beat all yandere girls, completely obsessed by him and deranged in a way I don't think I've ever seen in anime - she really is a sight to behold. The other 10 we get to see in outline only, but they'll have to make their proper appearances sooner or later.
THE GOOD: Blood, gore, violence and Yuno, oh my.
THE BAD: Possibly a little too gratuitous on the violence front, bad CG (especially Deus), not the best looking of shows overall.
Mirai Nikki has proved itself well worth waiting for, then, and is most definitely a keeper. Looking forward to further carnage...
