(c) maoOtome Youkai Zakuro is about romance between the fox spirit girls and the army guys who was sent to work with them at the Ministry of Spirit Affairs. Heh but it doesn't as easy and romantic as it sounds. And the story is not all about them finding romance, they have to fight youkai monsters as well as trying to bridge the gap between human and youkai.First of all, there is Zakuro who is actually the female who leads the house of the spirits. She's very stubborn and does not want to help the human. Then there's Agemaki who looks charming and capable but is totally useless when dealing with youkai. However Zakuro is still a girl so obviously she will fall for Agemaki's charm until she found out the truth. But yeah, it was kinda funny every time Agemaki has to face Zakuro or the Youkai. I love the chemistry between these two. In fact I love the chemistry between Hotaru and Riken too. They are like the shy couple that you can help but root for. Then there are the twin Bonbori and Hoozuki who have taken a liking with their short partner who is imo the most annoying character in the show, Ganryuu. Lucky bastard. The overall art and animation is very pretty. Compared to Bakuman, it looks like this one is the golden project for JC Staff. It is definitely up to their standard at least. I love the colors in it. They are so vibrant and lively. The character designs can be a little unique I guess but I'm not complaining. They were not paying too much attention to the side/background characters too. They are average at best. Oh well, Agemaki does looks like a bishie and the fox girls all have their own charming character traits. At first I though the OP is hauntingly beautiful. It is, imo, so uniquely Japanese so I can't help but like it a lot. But then they really got into the real OP and my hope crushed. It was very bouncy and dancy, kinda like DRR song. Later did I found out that the first song I heard was actually Hotaru, Hoozuki and Bonbori singing when Zakuro fights. The ED on the other hand is too girly for my taste but it isn't bad at all if you are into girly songs. Sorry to say that the voices of the characters do not sound familiar to me at all which mean I dunno who they are. Having said that, they did a good job with the characters and represent them well. This show is directed by Chiaki Kon. He kinda has that versatility I guess, although I really don't like Junjou Romantica. I think that was his worst achievements ever. But he did well with Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Umineko. So far this show is definitely on my watch list. He must have done something right otherwise I won't even be bothered with something like this .So needless to say I enjoy this one a lot. I'll definitely keep my eyes on this show. Sometimes, I am just a hopeless romantic :Part and animation 8/10story 8/10character 8/10sound 7/10enjoyment 9/10overall 8.5/10

Otome Yokai Zakuro With everything else out this season, Otome Yokai Zakuro went way under my radar. I was half-expecting something like an already established group getting past their species difference to trust each other, with some mild adversary along the way. Not what looks like a matchmaking service, where the real problem between the [...]

Otome Youkai Zakuro may be this season’s main shoujo anime, but beneath the sparkly flowery bishies, the Ouran–esque cast of shoujo archetypes, and the fast track to fluffy romance, there also lies a comparative tale of cultural encroachment and admixture. After all, we may be set in an alternate Meiji-era Japan, but it still parallels [...]

Minnie: This is Minnie again with another first episode. Otome wasn’t too high on my watch list. The only reason why I wanted to try it was because JC Staff was animating it and I like myself some shoujo just to see. I am pleasantly surprised though. It’s typical shoujo stuff, BUT I think… I [...]

With my interest in it piqued due to its cute animal eared girl characters, caught the first episode of “Otome Youkai Zakuro”, the anime adaptation of a manga series by Hoshino Lily. It turned out to be surprisingly good. Although Hoshino Lily is better known for creating shounen-ai manga, the original おとめ妖怪 ざくろ manga is [...]

Technically, the last true season of the year has begun. While it doesn’t seem to be as impressive as the offerings of the spring season, there are quite a few anime that I have decided to give chances to, and one of them is Otome Youkai Zakuro.
As I expected nothing whatsoever from the anime, [...]

Beautiful animation to suit a beautiful lady.
Otome Youkai Zakuro really surprised me. I didn’t really read any kind of synopsis or previewed any of the trailers. Basically I went in blind and came out enjoying the hell out of it. I tend to really like premises that mix together characters of different races, especially when it comes to humans and youkai. There’s bound to be clashes of beliefs, cultures and such in these sorts of shows. Simply put the two races in Otome Youkai Zakuro, while technically co-existing, still view ...

While waiting for season two of Hakuouki to appear, I thought I would take a look at the other alternate history with supernatural beings, Otome Youkai Zakuro. It turns out to have much more comedy, more romance, and much less history than Hakuouki. The first episode was amusing, and played like a decent shoujo rom-com, [...]

Flowers! Pink! Blood! Well, if there’s one show that has surprised me thus far this season, it is Otome Youkai Zakuro. Crunchyroll have added another title to their simulcast list for the coming season: Otome Yokai Zakuro, which takes place during the Meiji Westernization Movement in an alternate world where humans and spirits coexist as young half-spirit girls team up with army officers to battle against spirits who would do wrong. I note distinct nekomimi in the promotional art, which may give you an idea of what sort of audience this is going for. The first episode goes live for paid subscribers at 7pm UK time on Monday (4th October), with freeloaders getting access a week later.
