Surprisingly, this week’s Sankarea had no Rea in it! However I think it was the cutest episode so far. Seeing Chihiro’s and Ranko’s childhood made me like Ranko even more! But at the same time I felt bad for her because of how Chihiro was ignoring her. He was an otaku even when he [...]

I don’t remember Ranko’s past and first meeting with Chihiro being fleshed out to such detail in the manga, but nevertheless this episode does complement and build on her character quite a bit more. Even I had to say I was rather moved by this episode, and I’m not exactly a big fan of her. [...]

Finally... A whole episode devoted to Ranko! For all the Ranko fans, I can see why you love her so much now.

Sankarea is rubbing Ranko’s sad one sided childhood love in are face. They shamelessly show us how cute she is as a child and how her actions lead to Chihiro maturing into the socially adept teenager with one friend more than he would have had if she ignored him. Ranko reminds me so much [...]

A very Wanko-focused episode this week. Rea doesn’t even show up. As Chihiro helps out at her family’s inn, we get a glimpse at the history the two have together. Kind of a cool story…Wanko starts out seeing Chihiro as a brave prince when he helps her in the graveyard, but this is only situational [...]

Late entry and Babu. On-going Thoughts: Episode When Wanko discovers that Rea is a zombie, she insults Chihiro, and proclaims him to be a murderer. He tries to explain himself, but Rea follows Babu out on the housetop, interrupting their quarrel. Chihiro tells Wanko to get his grandfather (she doesn’t get along well with him), [...]

Sankarea's seventh episode is simply beautiful as it consists of a truly lovely look into the past of our protagonist's well-developed bishoujo cousin, Wanko - an exploration of her background, and of her love.

Sankarea
Chihiro Furuya is a zombie-loving weirdo who becomes depressed when his pet cat, Babu, dies after being hit by a car. Wanting to see him alive again, Chihiro looks into an old manuscript describing resurrection and starts doing experiments at an abandoned building, where he encounters a girl named Rea Sanka, who is depressed about how controlled her life is. When Rea learns that Chihiro had been eavesdropping on her secret rants, she decides to help him in his experiments, warming up to the idea that, if she were to become a zombie, Chihiro would take responsibility and look after her...
Sankarea is another one of those shows where you don't want to go by the first impression. At a glance, it's "guy who dreams of getting it on with the undead meets a girl who'd like to become one", which kinda makes it sound like "Necrophilia: The Anime", but it's a bit more nuanced than that. Yes, Chihiro has a worrying obsessions with things that shamble, but Rea is a far more developed character: the victim of an abusive father (more emotional than physical abuse, but when you see how he treats Rea you can't help but wonder how far away physical abuse is), her story is developed over the first few episodes to the point where her desire to die is fully believable. For all that there's a rather grim and depressing tone to events, though, it's also a show that's really rather sweet, in the way that it develops the relationship between Chihiro and Rea - and that's what makes the show interesting. Quite what Rea's going to do when she gets her wish, though, remains to be seen.
THE GOOD: Atmospheric, some really good characters - both bad guys and good (Rea's father is a very hatable piece of work), seems to be going in an interesting direction...
THE BAD: ...but I'm not entirely certain how workable it's going to be in the long run. Come episode 3, Rea gets her wish and Chihiro gets a zombie to woo, but what now? Something more than romantic comedy, please.
It has charm, though, and that - along with a healthy dose of curiousity - is enough to keep me watching.
Sankarea is streamed by FUNimation (North America only).

Previously on Sankarea: Fetishes everywhere. From Chihiro being crushed while making out with a zombie to several lingering shots of Ranko’s feet and legs, the saturation of fanservice in the last episode was such that it eclipsed everything else in the episode. It wasn’t the most annoying blatant fanservice ever used, but the way that [...]

Chihiro is having the time of his life: filming zombie ero. Episode 06 - While there seemed to be a trend in recent episodes showcasing some fanservice of the main girls, this episode once again touched upon what has made Sankarea a surprise hit; it’s focus on the human elements to the characters, their warmth and friendliness, all tinged with a hint of sadness. This is [...]
