It’s beginning! They found a robot library and they’re going to learn everything! Saki got me thinking she was all special, but it was just the sunglasses protecting her from hypnosis…or at least so we think for now. Always the chance that they were just a convenient explanation…or maybe that’s just me being too suspicious. [...]

I want to apologize. For some reason I thought Shin Sekai Yori’s episodes came out on Tuesdays, not over the weekend so I apologize for my late posts. I want to thank Rei for clarifying this for me. Episode 2 of Shin Sekai Yori was another “World Building” episode. We focused on the characters at [...]

Despite the highly suspicious disappearance of one of their number, the under-achiever Reiko, at the end of its opening episode, everything carries on as normal for the kids of the Unified Class within episode two of Shin Sekai Yori, albeit not before a brief aside featuring the "crowning" of a new Emporer 500 years from now; an Emporer who is as crazy as he is floaty, it seems.
With that out of

Right. So this episode didn’t provide me with much new material to chew over- same setting, same characters, roughly the same goings on… Even the ‘we’re-going-to-kind-of-explain-how-the-new-world’s-come-about-and-oh-in-case-you-didn’t-get-that-the-fact-it-was-built-on-fear-and-the-blood-of-innocents-was-bad-we’re-gonna-wobble-the-camera-about-a-lot’ was rehashed. So I’m just going to talk about some more of the things that have interested me about the show so far that I didn’t manage to squeeze [...]

Vanishing Children As the main plot has yet to be revealed, this episode continues to build up the mystery and ominous atmosphere around Sage Academy. First, it begins with another flashback that took place 500 years after the first one, in which a crowd of people eagerly anticipate the appearance of the Emperor of Delight. [...]

It's a fascinating world that Shin Sekai Yori is building here, and along its atmospheric presentation that doesn't let up, the show continues to be an engrossing watch.

Man, that 2 minute opening scene is just sick. This anime is a total keeper. I really like that little ballgame which comprised the first half of the episode. It had tactics and the right amount of suspense for a … Continue reading →

So initially, nothing is really happening in this week’s episode. The only thing slightly off is that Reiko from last week is just gone…it’s not even too apparent either. But then a couple of things happen (that were actually not that huge). First, we’re introduced to these strange grunt workers. Saki’s father suggests that rebellion [...]

That was different.
In one word: potential. This could really shape up to be something, since the first episode feels like the tip of the iceberg. A lot of time was dedicated to subtle world building, starting out in what looks like our time period and then jumping forward a thousand years to a place that seems to be inhabited by psychics. This was basically a "daily school life" episode, yet the contrast between what was happening and what your run-of-the-mill school life episode would be like says a lot about what we're in for. There's clearly been a backslide in technology, and the kids' schooling is focused around learning how to control their powers and stories about mythical creatures rather than math and literature. Also, there's a huge amount of suspense surrounding deaths and disappearances that the adults seem to know more about than the kids.
The episode seemed to be mostly concerned with establishing a mood, and I think it succeeded. The rest of the show will probably hang on whether it'll be able to out a compelling story out of that, because I'm not really sure what direction it will take. I'm really liking the mystery part of it and finding out more about how this world works. The animation is pretty solid, although you can't really see it for most of the time since the characters spend the majority of the episode in shadow. The most interesting part visually was the watercolor story/lesson, and I thought it worked really well. Is that going to be the standard for flashbacks in the show? Anyway, the first episode did its job getting me interested. Now let's see what they do with it.

If I’m going to remember Shin Sekai Yori for something superficial, then it would be how it didn’t have an OP for two episodes straight. At least it had a ED. There’s something that makes Shin Sekai Yori reminiscent of the Winter season’s Another. A sinister feel exists and there is an ongoing mystery involving … Continue reading »

The new season of anime has started! Each season brings with it a series or two that deals with spiritual, supernatural, and/or religious themes. Since these ideas are often used simply as a plot device with little meaning, I tend to ignore these shows. But Shin Sekai Yori may be a little different. And the [...]
