Ayumu Aikawa (outwardly a normal high school boy) is, unfortunately, dead - the sad result of a run-in with a murderer with a Big F**king Sword. On the other hand, he's fortunate enough to live with a necromancer, who has brought him back as a zombie. Of the rather lifelike, non-shambling type. He's using his afterlife to try and track down the man who killed him, although at the moment all he's able to do is search randomly. One of his searches, though, brings him face-to-face with chainsaw-wielding magical girl Haruna, who's doing her damnedest to kill him. Again. But all is not as it seems, and when Haruna loses her magical powers, Ayumu is forced to take on her duties - and that includes her magical dress...
Hoo boy, we've got a right one here. Kore wa Zombie desu ka? is aiming straight for the shock value, with levels of violence and gore that I haven't seen in a comedy since Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan - so that's one tick in the "hell, yeah" column. Necromancer Yuu (full name Eucliwood Hellscythe) is 100% adorable, especially when seen through Ayumu's eyes (he sees her rather differently from reality), and Haruna, well, is Haruna - all attitude, but by the end of this episode not much else, as her magic has been, err, magically transferred to Ayumu, an event that eventually delivers one of the most surprising transformation sequences that you'll ever see. And you'll only ever want to see it once.
The Good: Dear god, where to start. Each of the three main characters that we get to meet in this episode has something about them that makes them appealing - Ayumu's deadpan snark mode and simply being a zombie, Yuu's notepad fetish, or Haruna being the only magical girl I've ever seen who uses a chainsaw as her weapon of choice. Combine them with blunt, violent humour - slapstick++ - that tickled my funny bone just right, and it's almost impossible not to love it.
The Bad: Genuinely can't think of anything yet. I'm sure something that annoys me will rear its ugly head over the next few episodes, but as first episodes go, this was just about perfect.
I had high hopes for this one when I sat down to watch it - the idea had potential, and from the moment I saw Haruna plus chainsaw in the promo clip I knew I was onto something. And, for once, it lived up to expectations. This seems to fill the guilty oleasure / mindless fun box for this season, and so far at least it's doing it really well.
