I came upon this originally on Gainax's website this morning and then noted that ANN says the app is available in the United States-- a company called Media Magic has launched apps for Gurren Lagann and Evangelion, and they're a bit more involved than the Eva apps from Appliya (which were still pretty fun-lookin'). Well...the Gurren Lagann one is, anyway. Geez, guys, don't look too excited or anything. The Gurren Lagann app features a virtual Yoko, and yes, you can touch her a la Doki Doki Majou Shinpan and see how she responds...it's probably a good thing that your iWhatever can't be programmed to hit you. The program also factors in time of day and special events. It also has an address book with Gurren Lagann icons and there may also be some hidden secrets as well! Sounds pretty fun to me. The Evangelion app features Rei as a morose weather reporter. Which...honestly doesn't sound all that exciting to me, although I do like to keep up on the local weather reports. Apparently this app will require a monthly subscription. Another Eva app features a 3D EVA unit...but to get anything really cool out of it you apparently have to visit the junior high school in Hakone (outside Tokyo) that inspired the school's design in Evangelion, and point your camera at the right place on the right day and the EVA-01 will appear on your screen. (There are also going to be Eva 2.22 screenings at the gym in May.) Which is kinda neat in theory but probably not very useful for our readers, who are primarily in North America. That said, while ANN says that these apps are available in the US, I would be surprised if either was actually in English, so consider yourself warned. ...That said, I wish I had some kind of iPhone emulator so I could play with the Yoko app. If any of you do, let us know how it goes!
